Harvey, I treasure the set of twelve needle files I purchased over 40 years ago at Billy Arthur's in Chapel Hill for $5.50. Marked "Made in Western Germany," they are mounted in a wood block which fits neatly inside of the original cardboard storage box. That kind of quality at that price is gone forever, alas. "You only purchase a good tool once...."

For this task, I'll spend a few bucks on a good file.

Couldn't you press down on the half nut at the bad spot and straighten it? Just asking because it sounds like it would work?

Probly might...if I had the half nut. Several things missing from this puppy.

I have an extra half nut, there were two extras in the bottom of my Standard D when I bought it last summer. Let me know if you are interested. I do not know the condition of the threads right now, but I can check when I get back home tomorrow evening.

The poster's machine is a Home: a Standard half nut will not work.

Alas! I'll have to search elsewhere. Is there a recognized source for parts?

I didn't know if they were interchangeable or not.

Thanks for the source info. Does Mr. Sitko have an email?

I wuz mistaken; the half-nut is there. I just couldn't see the threads without magnification. If I ever get the main shaft unfroze, I'll see what traversing the half-nut over the damaged spots does.
