Nope - no serial numbers on these little Home Shaving Machines (that I can see, anyway). That would make it too easy!

Does anyone actually use these box type, blade shavers? Of course I have never been able to use or have one.... How do they work?? I have always had to shave the four minute blanks on the Ediphone shaver, and to do that I throw the feed belt off of the shaving feed screw and feed the shaving head across the blank by hand, by turning the feed screw pully slowly. It does a great job shaving them this way, the only worry is the composition, wearing out my shaver blade. While most shave probably less than a hundred blanks, I have to shave thousands of them, and when I shave unshaved blanks (which I do on another shaver, I use one for roughing work and one for fine work.), it is very hard on the shaver, as I shave freshly moulded (that means made not moldy.) from 2.32" down to 2.225, a size I use for seasoning the blank at. They sometimes are very eccentric from the mold. Once the blank has sat from 30-90 days it is shaved around 2.196-2.170,depending on when I stop.

Can a regular Ediphone be used to shave a cylinder?

Yes you can shave brown wax blanks, standard kind on a Dictaphone or Ediphone shaver. I suggest a mid speed, as too high a speed can shatter the blank. See a shaver in action in a video I produced. This video shows the production of brown wax and includes rough and smooth shaving a blank, so there is about 3 minutes shaving the blank from a rough casting on one shaver, and finishing it on a later Edison shaver.
. These are entertainment blanks manufactured, this is an older method, and not the improved new method I used. Shaving is about 8min 47seconds into the video. Still, has anyone shaved a cylinder with the box kind of shaver this thread mentions, and how does it do? I suspect this might be the quick and easy way of shaving a Gold MOulded record to record on. You can get a clear recording on the surface, however I don't believe it is good to shave those cylinders due to the extra ingredients making them hard on the shaving knife of a machine, or electric shaving machine, so perhaps the box shaver is a good alternative to shaving Gold Moulded without so much fear of wearing out a costly sapphire.

The best electric shaver that is simple to use (instruction on a plate right in front of the on and off lever) is the Ediphone Master Shaver made in the late 1940s, early 1950's I finish cylinders on this shaver. Below is a photo of that shaver (I have the top just don't have it on the machine as it is used daily. This photo is a living history setup I did at the Tri-County Fair in Mendota, IL.
