Here is a Yiddish disc in my collection....
"THIS VERY EARLY 10" COLUMBIA RECORD HAS A PAPER LABEL SHOWING "HAPPY DAYS IN DIXIE" # 608. HOWEVER, IT IS MISLABELED. THE RECORDING IS "SCHMENDRIRKS BESINDEN" OR "OPINION OF IDIOTS" #898-2 BY FRANK SEIDEN. THIS MAY BE ONE OF THE OLDEST DISC RECORDINGS IN YIDDISH CIRCA 1901."

Re: WANTED: Yiddish, Hebrew, 'Klezmer', UHD&C - Cylinder Records
Hi,
Does anyone know when Columbia started issuing "Hebrew" selections (actually Yiddish) on brown wax? I see that Edison had a few in Aug of 1900 by Wm Dory. Was Columbia around the same time - and who were their artists?
I'm working on a List of Hebrew Lamberts that put such songs on celluloid for the first time, apparently arranged by the Standard Phonograph Co. on the Lower East Side, ca 1902-1903.
TIA for any assistance on the similar Columbia repertoire, ca 1900-1902.

Maybe this has already been covered, but Lambert also made some of these. I don’t own any, or haven’t ever seen one fir sale, but I did buy this CD which records them. It’s a fascinating piece of history:

Re: WANTED: Yiddish, Hebrew, 'Klezmer', UHD&C - Cylinder Records
The CD Album from Archeophone Records is very well done, and as usual, their Liner Notes (an extensive booklet) is well researched and a delight to read.
I did find out that Columbia's first "Hebrew" Selections (cylinder) were in a block, from 26500-26542, and date from c. 1901 (brown wax). They were sung by Frank Seiden, but I wish I could get a better date than simply a year. I wonder WHEN they appeared, or were listed, to the nearest month in 1901?
Anyway, one of the mysteries about the celluloid Yiddish Lamberts (1902-1903), is how Thomas Lambert, a mid-westerner from Ohio and Chicago, managed to connect with George Lando at the Standard Phonograph Co. on the Lower East Side of NYC. It was very unusual for the Lambert Co to allow another company (Standard) to make their own announcement on the record. If one listens closely to these "Attractive Hebrews", the announcer at the beginning doesn't say "Lambert Records", BUT "Standard Record."
I don't think anyone has ever found any boxes or other ephemera from this obscure company which was located at 451 Grand Street. The founder had been a photographer, an optician, and a phonograph dealer. They went bankrupt in 1903 and Lambert folded in 1906.
No one has ever found a dated Lambert flyer or record catalog from 1900-1901-1902 (just 1903-1904).
Thanks for looking!
