First of all you need to replace all of the old wax capacitors in the amp. Don't go through checking if they're leaky or not they're all bad so replace them trust me. Order new capacitors from Sal's capacitor corner. http://www.tuberadios.com/capacitors/

I don't really understand what your asking about a voltage reading but I guarantee all of your problems will go away if you re cap the amp.

You should not have any voltage on the pick-up wires, except the variable voltage waveform when the phono pickup is playing a record. There should be no voltage on the pick-up wires otherwise. The likely cause of you getting a voltage reading on the pickup wires is that your amp needs all the capacitors replaced, as mentioned several times in posts above.

Thanks Phototone , That is exactly what i wanted to hear . Now i will know when i reach the problem zero voltage = problem found . I have modern style caps and have been told they are non directional can that be confirmed by someone? Thanks for the help i really do thank all of you for your replies!!

There are a few electrolytic capacitors in the amp that are polarity sensitive and have to be installed correctly. Some different possible schematics are on the link below - the electrolytic capacitors are the ones C5 a/b/c having the "+" desigated on them. The original electrolytics were tubular and contained either 2 or 3 sections in the same package.

That is the video one of many i have been referencing . I have all the capacitors changed and i am reading 400 mv or about a half of volt in pick up wires with a dvom . i am waiting for a cartridge but i have my doubts because i can't get even a scratchy sound when i touch the leads together ?

Yeah, you get a hum or something when you touch the leads. If you have the changer connected to the amp, make sure the muting switch on the changer isn't closed.

I used a ohm meter and it beeps when tone arm comes back and then stops when it drops back down on the record but still no static of any kind . I will wait for the cartridge and see what happens .

Ok if anyone is still willing to help i recapped the amp ,installed a Willie Bossco cartridge the tubes light up muting switch is working , i have continuity in lead wires all connections look good i fixed all the mechanical problems with record changer , could it be something as simple as a tube? Thanks !
