It seems that for lateral acoustic recordings, a larger diameter recording diaphragm was used,I think the larger diaphragm was used so the sound waves would wiggle the cutter with enough powers. The vertical cylinder recordings (even diamond disc recorders, seem to use a 33mm diaphragm.) When you use a diaphragm larger than 33mm the high frequency response falls off and the clarity. Anyhow, yes you have to be dramatic in acoustical recording, to be understood, not so much for vertical recording, however lateral recording, however artist recorded in different formats, and developed the dramatics, and used it wherever they recorded.
