(whispering) Pssst! Don't tell anyone, but I think they play electricals better than Orthophonic machines too.

Travel?
Come to NW Missouri and I will outfit you with a great Victrola XVII and your choice of over 3000 78's pretty economically.

Thanks all. What is the going price on a lateral adapter for the Edison these days? I've seen them on Ebay, upwards of $150+, might as well keep saving for complete unit

. My budget currently isn't on the high side

Just wanted to get a head start on what to look for. Still will probably want a 78's phonograph, though the wife kind of expressed interest in a table top external horn version... hmmm

Will keep an eye open here and check Craigslist, up to 8 hours away

. Gives me something to do before work...

That's a bit of a travel, thanks for the offer though. If you ship 78's, I'll have to keep you in mind.

Hmmm, indeed. That is a good sign when the spouse has any interest in your hobby.

If I was going to have only one external horn tabletop for playing 78s, and for a reasonable price, I would buy a Victor III with a petal horn. There are other threads where members extol the virtues of their favorite machine, but the Victor III is my choice.

Looks like I don't have to be too picky.
