Re: Demonstrating another custom diaphragm.
Perhaps I missed how you make these custom diaphragms in a previous thread. Are they made using a standard mica base, to which some dampening compound is pasted in the central area? Coincidentally, I have observed many times that the sound of a soundbox improves (or at least to my ears it does) if the diaphragm is a bit dampened: it helps avoiding rattles, and the sound feels more balanced in the high tones end of the spectrum.

They're of a rice paper and fiberglass resin base with a polystyrene stiffener. Edison did use stepped mica diaphragms in some cylinder machines.Marco Gilardetti wrote:Perhaps I missed how you make these custom diaphragms in a previous thread. Re: Demonstrating another custom diaphragm.
I finally had some time today to make a installation, test and video of the diaphragm which he sent me for testing.
I installed it in my Victrola No. 2 and it worked great. I decided I would check one of my lateral reproducers that I use on an adapter, and installed it into this reproducer and it works great (fortunately, the reproducer diaphragm is the same as a Victrola No. 2).
Here is the video, you may hear some distortion in the video which is not present in the actual recording.

Great job!

Sounds absolutely incredible!
Do you mind if I ask how thick the rice paper is?

Indeed it sounds great, it is a vast improvement over the mica, congratulations for the inventiveness!Phonoboy wrote:An electric demo as promised.CarlosV wrote:It sounds quite good, it would be nice to hear it playing an electrical recording. Have you adapted your Edison diaphragm to the Victor 2?
