Thanks for the tip Doug, something to think about.
Could you one of you measure the distance from the top of the mandrel to the carriage, in the center of the mandrel, at the left, next to the casting? Then we could compare heights and see if something is actually wrong with my carriage...

Benjamin,
My machine measures ⅝" between mandrel and centre of carriage next to the casting.

Alistair

Alistair: was that measured to the bottom of the carriage?

That is from the top of the mandrel to the underside of the carriage next to the pulley casting.

Alistair.

The linkage on my Lyric reproducer from my BF looks different than yours... is that the correct reproducer?

Curt: Several styles of Lyric reproducers were made over the years; I've seen several of mine, so I'm assuming it's the correct one.
I've measured the distance from my mandrel to the carriage, and it is only ½", compared to Alistair's ⅝". Obviously something wrong with that. I took the whole carriage assembly apart, and found that the pin that is attached the the feed nut, is bent. Does anyone know if this is normal? If this isn't that could be a sign that the guide arm has been bent in the past...

Update: I dissasembled everything, and found that on the bottom of the carriage guide arm, the nickel was wrinkled. Too me, combined with the fact that the carriage was too low, this proved that the guide arm had been bent at some time in the past. I took the arm out, and carefully bent it, a little at a time, continually checking to make sure I didn't go too far. I've now got it so that the carriage is between ½ and ⅝" from the mandrel. The stylus is now in a proper position for playing, and raises easily enough to allow a record to be put on the mandrel...
