It doesn't look too awful. It seems that a coat of black enamel on the metal shell and a layer of black shoeshine polish on the "leather" (= cardboard) would do the job.

WOW!! The black looks wonderful! Thanks for the paint recommendation. I've been having trouble filling in missing gold spots on my portables.

I wonder why this color never came as an option? I have all of the color variations in this model, and I might have to "make" a black one now to complete the line up! :)

Also, how did you go about painting the pot metal back bracket? And is it the original one? I would imagine scraping paint off of it would have broken it

It is the original bracket, and is in good shape with no cracks. My father took it to work and sandblasted it along with the shell bits.

Since this has survived about 90 years, and may be around for 90 more, you might want to tuck a note affixed inside the cabinet (the next time you have to open it for servicing) detailing the modifications you made for owners in the far flung future.

In any event, I think you've done a beautiful job. I'm sure even Weiland Alfred and Selden T Williams would approve. (See: https://www.google.com/patents/US1954162 )
