Are you sure the person who received the item three months ago is helping you resolve the issue? He may be scamming you.

the only situation in which I can really imagine a credit card company seeking to recover funds from a merchant (or in this case paypal) would be where the "buyer" or initiator of the charge was claiming that the charge was invalid, that he/she never made it, and thus that he/she shouldn't have to pay for that charge on his/her credit card bill.
in other words, buyer disputes charge on monthly statement, credit card company investigates where the money went and seeks to recover... here, the company went to paypal, which in turn went back to you (at least, that's my understanding of it as you presented the story)... in any court of law, the burden of proof would be on the credit card company, but in the world of ebay and paypal, when there are no courts or judicial process involved, guilt typically is assumed and the burden falls often enough on an innocent party, here you, to show them why they should not take the money back from you.
I hope that you don't leave money in your paypal account, as some people do... but instead immediately withdraw it and/or have it transferred to your bank account. if you do, it will make it that much more difficult for paypal to simply take this money from you. if you don't do this, you should immediately start.
do you know what credit card company initiated the dispute with paypal?
in any event, this really is something that shouldn't require more than a couple of calls to paypal to sort out. but my best guess, based on the limited facts spoken of in this thread, is that none of this could really be happening unless the buyer/credit card holder was contesting the charge - otherwise, why would the credit card company be contesting it with paypal and you?

Well put Brian. That is why I question whether the buyer is really lying to our fellow collector and is trying to make some money here or whether the buyer is not contacting his credit card company and not telling it to stop pursing the claim because of a mix up.

Don't forget the good old simple clerical error. With all the long numbers involved with accounts such as this one transposed digit can throw a monkey wrench in the whole works. Particularly if it involves two separate companies as Brian says.

I just got off the phone with PayPal and the charge has been removed from my account. While I am indeed relieved to have this ordeal concluded (hopefully) I am still left and will remain disillusioned by the fact that THREE months after a successful transaction had concluded, a chargeback was initiated and honored. If it were not for my being a packrat and keeping everything I had on the transaction including emails and (thankfully) the buyer's cooperation to assist in getting the chargeback reversed I would likely still be without my item and without the payment. Thanks again to all who contributed their feelings on this.
