I also tend to like these details that characterise a production batch or a period from another. Many years ago, when I first met with records without lead-in/lead-out grooves, or single-sided records, I was really impressed by their peculiarities. It felt like having the recording history and technical progress right in your hands, on real hardware! Today we take it for granted, but the idea of a double-sided record was indeed a clever one!

Were records with raised rim never produced in the States? I'm quite surprised that an experienced amateur like you didn't have any in his collection, and I wonder if they were exclusively European. As a matter of fact, all these records belonging to your recent acquisition seem to come from Europe.

I've seen that raised bead on some of my foreign records.
I usually see that bead on some of the early single sided Columbias and records derived from them.

Speaking of earlier Columbia and client discs having these ridges, I have noticed on some of mine not a ridge, but rather guard grooves both before and after the recording. Sorry for the poor quality pics. 2 Columbias and an Oxford.
