Another suggestion: since you are just starting your collection, start a list now. Maybe you will be able to remember what you have for a while, but sooner or later you will start buying duplicates without realizing it. I know I did so I created an Excel spreadsheet to list my records as I purchase them. I keep the master lists on my computer and a copy on a small tablet which I carry with me.

Always look through every stack you come across. You never know what might be lurking in there.

Kurt Nauck was the record auction I was trying to think of, and couldn't remember it.

I have bought a number of disc and cylinder records here on the forum, and have been happy, safe shipping has never been an issue.

You might also hook-up with a forum member who is not far from you, or who passes through your area, and can fix you up with some records or help transport from another member.

We have a number of forum participants in the DC-Metro area...

Greetings! I enjoy the thrill of the hunt.
I was not, and still am not, familiar with many early 20th century works, so I get a big thrill out of buying a 78 for a buck or less and listening to it. I often find 78s - some very interesting ones - for a 1.00. 50 cents or even a quarter at thrift stores and estate sales. These are by far my most productive places. I also collect LPs and 45s, so one one trip I might not find a single 78, but a box of 45s or 50 LPS for a dime each. I actually found a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention Hot Rats LP for a dime at a thrift store last month. Frank never cut a 78

Good advice Jerry.

Job lots are an inexpensive way of building a collection, and sometimes you can strike gold. Keep what you want, then sell or swap what you don't, and if you are lucky you might even make the collection self financing.

Once you have decided which genres of music you want to specialise in, that is the time to draw up a "Wanted List" and start searching for individual records.
