Maybe it was for Thomas Edison's cigars since he was such a big cigar smoker.... The "Wooden Nickel" refers to how stingy Edison was...!!! - Sorry, I couldn't resist.. :lol:

In fact, it looks to me as though the "wooden" nickel IS a sponge; when I zoom on the image, I see a porous object with an Indian head imprint on it.

If this box was/is a humidor, it differs from the one I own. Mine has a metal lining (copper or brass), which would help retain moisture and freshness. (Written as a former tobacco smoker.)

It looks like one of the cigar or trinket boxes that my great grandmother gave me years ago. Now these are the things that misrepresent and mislead our hobby. Things like this are fantasy pieces and distorts the history to those that are unaware or are new comers to the hobby.
