The more I play this portable and the longer the few changes I made have begin working the results surpass what I consider to be very decent sound. No more of that metallic sound I objected to when I got it, a very decent bass on records that provide it. I can see now how the Cortez has become a cult classic for sound in the early electrical era. I just wish I had one.
I recorded a record today for putting on you tube latter in the day, It wasn't a perfect record but is sure displays the range of abilities it does well. I will try to put a link up in the Music section today or tomorrow.

My guess is that with time the ball bearings which were most likely greased or oiled originally over time they become dry or stuck. Freeing them up allows the movement of the stylus bar to work as intended. I have played quite a few more of my othophonic recordings and the improvement is noticeable. The only thing I wish is that Brunswick would have provided a spring that would have played the 12 inch records. Mine usually winds down before it gets to near the end.

Hi Larry, can you share the brand of penetrating oil you used? I'm always interested to see what other brands collectors trust and use on their machines. Thanks!
Just saw your note here, I used WD 40 penetrating oil in the spray can with the attached fold down nozzle. I got it at walmart. Only put a quick shot of it in each side the wiped off any over spray. I also put a paper towel over the open part of the reproducer to try and minimize and overspray getting in it.

Thanks, Larry. Was also wondering how Kroil would do. Been enjoying your YouTube posts. My Panatrope portable is next in line for refurb and will definitely try some of your tips and tricks on it.

I tired something else today that worked pretty well. On a "too loud" record I wanted to put up I placed a dust rag in the opening of the horn. Not enough to block it but loosely so it absorbed some of the sound. That worked. It removed most of the overdriven sound which I think is due to the small horn just not being able to handle that much frequency clearly.
