Maybe (?) it's just gold paint? Body shops do that kind of work on old Caddys.

Somebody is acting nuts on the bidding... just keeps tapping it up. Come on, it's got 7+ days to go...

Have authentic examples of gold plated Standard's been found?

I find it odd that it would be gold plated, but in an oak cabinet. Would also expect the mandrel to be gold. It doesn't look like a recent plating job to me as it seems to show some wear at the edges. Gold plating is really not that expensive. The trick is finding somebody who does it.

The Standard was available from the Edison factory with a Gold finish for an additional $50.00.

I think Curt A has hit the nail fair and squarely on the head ! Look again and there are many inconsistencies. The ID plate is a standard issue finished in nickel plate and black enamel. Many small parts , including screw - heads are not plated , indeed some of those screw - heads looks rather too clean and modern . Also notice much pitting evident , particularly on the end-gate , indicative of a strip and re-finish that has not been done well enough to hide its origins. It certainly would not have left the Edison factory with gold plated pitting !! That at least is my opinion of which I am fairly confident. The give-away , as I see it is that most parts that are normally nickelled , are still nickelled , it is only the formerly black lacquered parts that have been treated , which of course are far easier to strip and re-finish than plated parts. I have an Edison Gem with gold plated parts ( by an enthusiast here in the UK as an intended hoax many years ago ) which has gold plated mandrel ,gold plated C reproducer , screw - heads etc. Now that DOES look the business ! A Standard Model-B with a Model-C reproducer and a horn is still a good buy at $250.
