Charlie - No apology needed! It's often difficult to comprehend what someone is intending to say in the written word.

It sounds to me as though more pressure on the long arm is needed. Maybe a thin one directly under the wire clip? In the past, I've made these work by bending the top clip, so that the edges press the long arm down a bit, but be careful it doesn't snap!

The black hub that's mounted on the spindle can also become loose. If it does, prise off its' wire ring, and with a pair of pliers, squeeze it so that the gap is reduced, then force it back onto the hub.

I'm really looking forward to having the auto-brake working again. It's been a lot of trial and error, but in the wake of my tinkering, some good things happened, such as a much-needed cleaning of the apparatus. I will work on shoring up that arm this weekend and hopefully that will be *that* for awhile. I can't tell you how many times I've needed that brake to work (like when hands were full or cook pots needed attention) -- or when I just plain didn't want to get up out of my chair at a given moment!

Another good thing is, in the future when someone has an issue with this -- and they invariably will -- they have only to search the archives to find the solution!

Thank you again.

Best,
Charlie
