Charlie - No apology needed! It's often difficult to comprehend what someone is intending to say in the written word.
It sounds to me as though more pressure on the long arm is needed. Maybe a thin one directly under the wire clip? In the past, I've made these work by bending the top clip, so that the edges press the long arm down a bit, but be careful it doesn't snap!
The black hub that's mounted on the spindle can also become loose. If it does, prise off its' wire ring, and with a pair of pliers, squeeze it so that the gap is reduced, then force it back onto the hub.
