Homes are generally quieter, and far better looking, than Standards - in my opinion. Space considerations are a factor for some, but on an aesthetic and overall performance level I'll take a Home every time.

They are attractive for sure.

Supposedly, The Home model had a stronger mainspring than the Standard models.

I bought a Home as well as a beautiful Standard A in the green oak case from one of out members a couple of days ago. I cleaned, lubed and adjusted each machine and they are both whisper quiet, superb running machines. As far as performance goes, I cant tell any difference between the Home and Standard. I like them both.

If I wanted one machine to use I would pick a standard D. It is bullet proof and plays both 2 and 4 minute cylinders well. If I had to pick a home I would pick a home B with a 2/4 combination mandrel. It is fairly bullet proof and easier to take care of. It is also common and inexpensive . They both play well with the home having a stronger spring though. Homes weigh more and are larger than a standard but seem to play longer. I usually wind my machines after each cylinder any way. If you want something that plays well, sounds well, and is easy to use you may consider an Amberola model 30 or 50. They are only four minute machines though and take up a lot more space but the horn is enclosed in the cabinet works . Do some research and enjoy what you decide on. Price wise the home B may be the cheapest one to buy. Tom B
