Congratulations on your acquisition, and welcome to the Forum! Your VV-100 looks to be in exceptionally good condition; I'd say you got your money's worth, and then some. With the enlarged horn, it should pump out room-filling sound, to say the least. As to which 78s are suitable for it, my practice (VV-XI) is to play anything "shellac," which of course does not include the very late vinyl 78s. Just make sure that you're using a recently overhauled sound box (no. 2, I assume) with fresh, pliant gaskets front and rear, and that you change needles after every record side. You may find, as I have, that the great majority of your records will sound fine with soft-tone steel needles. I only rarely resort to medium-tone needles (as with some early acoustics) and practically never to loud-tone needles.

You probably know about this source, but in case you don't, look here: http://www.victor-victrola.com/100.htm

Lastly, would you be willing to share details as to where and how you acquired this machine?

What a great machine for $175! It's quite interesting how it has orange felt, usually the indication of a higher priced machine, and not the standard green felt. I understand that the VV-100 was low-end, but I also know that Victor had updated their product line a few years earlier. Do you know if it was an option, or if this was a standard feature? If you or anyone can jump in on this that'd be great.

Thanks so much! Yes, I when I'm not on this forum, that's usually my second stop haha. Of course, happy to share! When I starting looking to find my first machine, I was searching online and actually found it not too far from me on Craigslist. After reaching out to the seller, they told me they were moving out of state and couldn't fit it with them. Stinks for them to part with such a great machine, but it worked out well for me :)

I read the same thing that the VV-100 was considered a pretty "standard" machine, I'm not sure about the felt color, but I'm guessing someone else here should be able to answer.

I think Victor went to that orange felt late in the production of all those Victrolas before the Orthophonic machines came out. That's what I've noticed from the machines I've refinished over the years. The green felt hides the dirt & oil stains better though, but the orange doesn't seem to fade as much though.
