To the new collector, how far do you plan on going in this hobby?

Hey we got all these old timers arguing against readily available knowledge for our new collectors, I figured we got a new collector here and we could ask him if would be interested in learning about how to protect himself from fakery in the hobby. It is just a simple question....

Well, to those who aren't afraid, I'd love to learn more about scams, etc. Not interested in politics or fighting. Just new to the hobby. I've been a collector of old engines for years, and this is a new hobby to me, so any help is appreciated.

Welcome. You've come to the right place. Most folks here are friendly and helpful and many have a world of experience.

As you might have guessed asking a phono collector what his or her favorite brand of cleaner to use on cabinets will get you all kinds of answers. All the brands mentioned here have their proponents, but they are all pretty good. (I am a Kotton Klenser fan myself.) You will be amazed how much difference a cleaning with Kotton Klenser or Gojo, etc. will do!

Congrats on the nice $10 find, where else can you have this much fun for $10.

In your video you mention having to get your tonearm lubed so it will track across the record. In this case its not that easy.

These Columbia tonearms are made of pot metal and swell up over time. To correct the problem the tonearm will need to be carefully disassembled and the joints worked with emery cloth to reduce the size and friction. Then polish and lube before reassembling.

This pot metal is very fragile, kind of like glass, it will break without warning. So proceed with careful caution, don't force things.
