Is This A Special Finish?

It is Ash and I had thought of the same thing. But researching it a bit, I found that wood can travel from county to county only if the counties traveled in are part of contiguous quarantined counties. And every one between the county I live in and his are a part of the quarantine. Wouldn't be a problem.

He sent me a couple more pictures. He said that it was in his attic for 40 years or so. He bought it back then from a neighbor who said it belonged to her Grandma, the original owner. He also mentioned that in his opinion, there was no way it was painted by anyone but the factory. (Of course!) Either way he mentioned the patina that should be about right for a 1920's piece. Here are the pics. Any thoughts?

I'm looking at this machine more... and I'm liking it. It def is not your typical "shabby chic" paint job.

Yea, I am in the same boat. The guy said that there is not a brush stroke anywhere on it, that the finish is professional. And you are right, it has a more authentic look then the "shabby chic" painting that went on in the 50's and 60's. Here are some more:

I like it too, however, tread lightly:

Victor did produce some painted pieces. These would have the victor decal inside the cover ON TOP of the paint.

There were a few aftermarket paint jobs on stock machines. These would maintain the decal by not painting where the decal was i.e. you can see the original finish.

I have read the above and seen it several times.

The machine in play here does not have either decal configuration under the lid suggesting to me that it is a one off painted piece that was not offered for sale.

Having said that, It is somewhat pleasing to the eye.

It's a nice job. Without it you'd have a mahogany X which is generally nothing remarkable. Would look lovely with some other pieces painted to co-ordinate.

Yup, Brad have to agree with Brad... the picture showing the underside of the lid most likely proves that this is not a factory job, perhaps period-professional yes... but probably not factory.

I think whenever it was done it was done professionally. Those flowers don't look like decals they look hand painted. It looks like every bit of hardware was removed prior to painting. The turntable felt looks new-ish, all in all it's a very interesting VV-X. I like it.
