How can you tell it's a 9-40? The cabinet used on the 9-40 was exactly the same on the 9-2 and 9-3. We may never be able to tell either; it might be gutted.
It was exactly the same - Until you have to interchange cabinet parts.

There were three basic cabinet designs built for the Borgia I, Borgia II, and 9-40 machines. The earliest cabinet design had two doors, tall bun feet (the same parts used on the early Credenza machines), and narrow base molding, much like the that seen on Credenza machines. Some time after Borgia I Serial Number 1111 and Borgia II Serial Number 2406 was produced the cabinet received a slight redesign, and was fitted with four doors. Later still, the cabinet was entirely re-designed structurally, with the tall base molding and short bun feet characteristic of the Credenza machine which were marked "8-30". Most of these redeisgned cabinet, which were fitted with pilot lights, are designated 9-40. I've seen one of these late cabinets with a Borgia II tag, but it had been a empty cabinet reconstructed, and the owner could not recall whether the plate was original to that particular box.

Just to answer Roland with a short answer... You can tell it's a VE 9-40 because there is a power-on light at the front center base of the cabinet.

Now, if you think you understand the differences, here's an additional tid-bid for you all... The 4-door VE 9-40 is almost 2" wider than the 2-door VE 9-40. Wonder if the same exist between the VE 9-2 (Borgia II) 4-door and 2-door machines. I have two 2-door Borgia II machines, so I don't know. Perhaps if someone could measure the base of their 4-door Borgia II and post it, I'll do the same.

It was the 9-40 that switched from a two door model to a four door model. The Borgia II were all two door cabinets.

I had always believed that to be the case until I found a machine with the thin base molding and tall bun feet, a Borgia II tag, and four doors, in cellar on 32nd St in Astoria, Queens back in 1998.

You learn something new every day. Doesn't really make sense. I know you would know if it was factory job.
