The biggest difference between the early style self-supporting tonearm and later model with the overhang support is not visible unless you look under the motor board. I happened to have both tonearms and I have compared them recently because I had the same dilemma - can I replace my new style tonearm with the old style tonearm because the overhang bracket in my new style tonearm is cracked? I have VV 1-90 that has the new style orthophonic tonearm with overhang support. I also got a tonearm from an early Granada with no overhang support. Both tonearms have similar dimensions. Self-supporting tonearm is considerably fatter at the base, but it still uses the same flange and mounting holes match, making two tonearms swappable. The big difference is how each tonearm seals with the horn. The later tonearm has the felt that does not rotate with the tonearm. The felt always stays with the bracket; it is pressed against the horn, thus creating a seal. The earlier tonearm on the other hand has the felt that rotates with the tonearm, which means that it cannot be pressed against the horn. I assume that there must have been an interfacing part in earlier orthophonics between the horn and the tonearm that would attach to the horn and allow the felt rotate in it, while maintaining a seal. As I said, dimensions of both tonearms allow me to swap them. However, the earlier style tonearm won't work in my 1-90 because the felt gets pressed against the horn and prevents the tonearm from rotating. I could remove the felt to make the tonearm rotate, but that means that the tonearm won't be sealed to the horn anymore. Therefore, there needs to be internal modification made in order to accommodate an earlier style tonearm as a replacement of the one with the overhang support. See videos in the link below showing the felt rotating together with the earlier tonearm, but staying with the bracket in the later model.

Could someone who has an earlier orthophonic confirm how rotating felt was sealed to the horn in self-supporting tonearm? I assume that either there was an interfacing part, tubular at the top, to accommodate rotating felt, or there was a round hole in the cabinet above the horn allowing the felt seal to go in the hole and rotate there.
