Ooh! Meanwhile, a friend from whom I've heard nothing in the past 10 years calls up and tells me that his neighbor lady has this "thing" which he describes as a Brunswick console ! For free ! Going to get that, this week! Good thing I've kept the '67 Dodge Van until now !

If the Sonora was anywhere near me, I'd snatch it up for that price without a second thought.

Soon as I saw that tiny HMV163 pic, I suspected FRAUD. Sure enough - do a Google search for images names "HMV 163" and you'll see the exact same pic at chrisbakergramophones (where it's 560pounds, not $2-5K !) Mr.CraigsJerk didn't even have the brains to steal the larger, clearer version - just the thumbnail.

Why does there appear to be so much fraud on Craigslist? It seems much more prevalent there than on eBAY for example, although there are certainly eBAY scams too...

How well do those Columbia portables sound compared to say, a VV-50, assuming both are restored and in about the same condition?

The Columbia will handle electric recordings much better than the VV-50- the soundbox is comparable to the Orthophonic (though it has rebuilding issues). If it's in good operating condition with no pot metal problems that Columbia portable is a steal.

Thanks for the info on the Columbia. I have a small portable right now that was given to me, but isnt much to speak of. Ive seen both up close, but never heard either of them. Thats good information to have when I get to that point when I need to make a decision. Much appreciated!

made by the WHITE HOUSE! :-)

Antique Phonograph - $100 (Crystal, MN)
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/a ... 46545.html

Thorens made wood cabinet tabletops? It is kinda plain... and no marking. maybe a good job homemade?

Thorens Phonograph - $250 (DAVIE, FL)
http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/atq/1500069760.html

This person notes "you can actually use modern tough plastic picnic plates to cut your own record" :-)

Recordio by Wilcox Gay player & cutter - $500 (San Francisco, CA)
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/atq/1500056286.html

Obviously not worth the price, but don't see to many Silvertone console models, looks a little more compact than most consoles.

Silvertone Phonograph and records - $600 (Mount Vernon, WA)
http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/atq/1500061472.html

slightly O/T: "the Rolls Royce of transcription motors" what does this mean? He's confident this is worth $1000 with no tonearm?

THORENS TD124 - $1000 (Upper West Side)
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/ele/1496612319.html
