You first have to split the blank until you attain the desired thickness. This is done by finding the "weak layers" with a very strong augmentation loupe and light and working with a very thin razor blade. Then the final layers can be removed using sellotape (yes, the humble sellotape!).
Once you have the blank with the desired thickness you cut it with a wide margin using scissors and you turn it down in the lathe to the derided diameter tightly hold between two aluminum blanks of thas same diameter.
