The carpet beetle 101?
No, my other 101. The carpet beetle 101 has been vacuumed, sprayed with insecticide, put in 5 plastic bags and stored in my shed. I will pack it and ship it back to the seller. He already refunded my money, and will refund the return shipping upon receiving the gramophone back. But let's not go into that. Anyone who's interested in the British invasion in the Netherlands can read it on the British forum.

Ah, that's right. You've got one of the very late 101's with the chrome plating.
That might be why it'll play more records than my early models. Mine play a 12" no problems, but dont have quite enough power to get through 2 x 10" sides. I know of 3 different motors that were used in 101's, but I only own 2 of them.
Is yours the enclosed motor that looks like a ham tin?

Thanks for the help and advise, everyone! :D I'm really not into HMV machines, so the help is highly appreciated.
Well, the seller is going to let me know when he ships it, so it should be with me very soon.

Congratulations Paal! :)

A friend of mine found one of these here in NY a few weeks ago and I was very impressed with the overall appearance and performance of it. I think you will be quite pleased with it!

Let us know when the gramophoner has arrived. Perhaps you could post a few pictures, and maybe a YouTube video? I have never heard a 104, but if the sound is similar to a 130 you won't be disappointed. As far as tabletop models go, this one should be one of the best.

Alright everyone. I got the HMV yesterday, and I was pleased with it. It played two 10" records on a full winding and I played about six records on it, but then I was cranking it again, and I heard some strange noises, I started a record and it slowed down at once and I started to crank it, but it wouldn't wind up. I've opened it and can't se anything wrong. Is the spring that is broken?

Just my luck!

It sounds like it Paal
You might be lucky & the spring may have just come unhooked from the centre arbor, but normally this will only happen if the machine has been run right down.
Any chance of posting a picture of the motor at some stage? I'd be interested in seeing which model motor was used in these.

Shane,

Here is a picture of the engine. And the spring is defiantly broken. I re-attached the centre arbor. It didn't work, so I think the spring is broken.
Anyone know where to find a replacement?

Paal.

Not sure about your side of the big pond Paal, however, on this side:

Wyatt's Musical Americana http://www.wyattsmusical.com/
Antique Phonograph supply company http://www.antiquephono.com

I have purchased several springs from Duane at Wyatt's and have always been pleased.
Why do we need signatures when we are on a first avatar basis?

You might think of ordering a copy to Eric Riess' The Compleat Talking Machine - there's much good information in this book regarding all areas of restoration, including solid information on repairing springs. I've done some spring repairs following Reiss' directions, with great results - and it's not that hard if you have a simple break at the end.

It's worth remembering that with some thought and care - and some time! - there's very little that can't be mended.

Good luck with this machine! I've wanted one for a long time!
