My opinion on this matter- it isn't a lubricant but I've used it when there is nothing else. There is a little bit of oil in it, but there is also a solvent which tends to liquefy any dried oils already on the item- so in the short run it can be useful- once you free the joint up you must clean it thoroughly before things gum up. It ain't a miracle.

I've also used it for starter fluid with a balky lawn mower.

Many years ago i got a 1909 mantle clock working again by spraying the movement with WD40. 20 years later when i was into clock repair & restoration i decided to restore the clock i sprayed and when i pulled the movement out, the WD40 had turned into a sticky mess, like it had adhesive sprayed on it.
An ultrasonic bath cleaned it all off, fortunately the clock was seldom wound ot it might have ruined the bushings.
Long story short, i dont have much use for WD40 these days.
