The other part is the brass spindle gear, that the fiber gear goes with. I couldn't tell by the pictures, but it looks like the brass gear is missing. Your machine is the later version from about 1912- 1915 or so. The early ones had a stamped oval metal grill, and the early push-pull speed control on the motor. The case was smaller, too.

I just redid a machine I believe is an Oxford Talking Machine that is basically the same thing. Are you sure yours isn't an Oxford?
This is yet another Columbia client, and the label reads "BZH HORNLESS TALKING MACHINE" I have no idea what firm marketed them & would like to know.

He is only missing the fiber gear. There is no brass spindle gear on this style of motor.

On mine, which is also this style, the spindle gear was fiber sandwiched in between some giant chunks of brass.

It runs and plays (thanks to the Forum!) but it isn't in the best of health, so I will likely replace this gear soon.

I guess these pillar and plate motors have different variations. Mine has the brass gear along with the fiber gear. That's what makes Columbia/Clients so much fun to work on.

Interesting how many variations there are on the BZH. Here's mine: forum.talkingmachine.info/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5317&p=30497

Thanks! Now to find one!
Ron Sitko may be able to help you out with the fiber gear.

Also, I believe all the "crank handles" were bored straight through the wood, rather than being male or female. ;)

I spoke with Ron and he said there are like 5 different ones and he would need to see the motor in person. My search continues!

Why not just send Ron the motor and have him fix it? You'll have it back in a week!

I may just do that! Also need a crank as well. Maybe I will get lucky and he will have one!
