My wife picked it up today. Any maintenance we should do on it?

If the dealer was honest and competent and really lubricated and serviced it, then there should not be a need for much maintenance right away. If you want you could post a few pictures of front and back of the reproducer (sound box), so we may be able to suggest if it appears to be properly serviced or not.
Here is a link to an original user manual for the VV-VIII: http://www.nipperhead.com/old/vicviii.htm. If you want to show us pictures of the motor, just unscrew the crank by turning it counter-clockwise. Follow the instructions in the manual on page 9 to remove the motor board. There you will also find instructions for lubricating the motor if necessary. Don't overdo it though. Usually a few drops of light sewing machine oil will be enough. Don't use 3 in 1 oil, because that will gum up over time. Good luck.

Now have fun with to your first talking machine.
