I'm curious as to why they are made out of ruby instead of sapphire like the originals? Other than that they look to be nicely made.

I’m glad to have met you and found your site! I wasn’t aware you had an account here...even better!walser wrote:Hi J.F. an all,
Thank you for posting this on the forum.
I fabricate the cutters. I can make them for Edison, Columbia, Pathé or any other recorder if you give me the dimensions or a picture.
I've tested them and borosilicate glass is hard enough for cutting at least 100 cylinders. And it can be resharpened with one stroke of a diamond lap.
I am going to do also a sapphire version but the price will be higher.
I can also supply a kit consisting on the glass or mica diaphragm, cutter and glue if you need it.
If you don't feel confident to install it yourself you can always send me the rwcorder and I will install it.
Best regards
Pedro Martinez

Re: Maybe y’all know about this: new cutter assemblies
Hi all,
I have developed new versions of the cutter. They are now available with sapphire cutter (cupped or chisel), edison, Pathé and Columbia variants.
And just today I did a first batch of aluminium bodied cutters for those who are looking for the very best cutter available.
I will be bringing some to the Rüdesheim faire on Nov 2-3.

Pedro Martínez

Re: Maybe y’all know about this: new cutter assemblies
This topic is such a hoot!
It comes up every few years.
Are these new cutters made with the cupped end?
I have, for many years now had access to a
supplier that makes very high quality polished
sapphire cupped-point 2 minute cutters.
They come in two models. One model has a straight
hole bored in the end, the other model has a tapered
hole. They both work, but the tapered hole model
is outstanding.
I have posted here repeatedly over the past many
years attempting to gain interest in a group purchase
of these cutters. If an order of 100 or more of
them can be made, they can be obtained for a better
unit price.
In my humble opinion, sapphire is the best material
for these cutters. Glass is too soft and will wear
quickly. Also, unless the cupped hollow end is
present, the recorded sound will be inferior.
The chisel-pointed Columbia recorder cutters prove
that beyond all reasonable doubt.

Yes, I make them with sappire and cupped end. Several collectors have tested them and the results are fantastic.

Please post a closeup picture here of the
cutting end of one of your sapphire cutters
for us to see.
What are you charging for these cutters?
What are you charging for the aluminum formed
stylus holders?
How much in U.S. Dollars?
Thanks, Chuck

Re: Maybe y’all know about this: new cutter assemblies
For my services, I have to have the best. Rich Goodin and I had them made about 18 years ago, and these are the ones that Chuck tested, they cut continuous swarf and have an excellent High-Frequency response. We allowed him to be the only person authorized to market them, we had a few other collectors contact the firm that made them, trying to get them without permission and the firm tipped off the industrial espionage authorities, so that was nipped in the bud. I also know of another guy making them here in the U.S. I only give his contact information offline. I am though very glad to see more cutters available. as I have lots of recorder bodies. And I am developing a set of several studio cutting heads for cylinder recordings.
