Mike (Soundgen): I now have the correct winding handle for my Monarch, it is pictured above here on my "kitsch kitchen" table. I started this thread last July, and the last post from today is showing the recently aqcuired winding handle. I understand you are busy, clearing out 4 lock up garages..
Thanks for your offer though, you are service minded and helpful...as always:)

I see no reason to doubt that the horn belongs to the machine. Its wood grained finish is typical of DG horns, and it looks the right size (18 x 18 in.) for what is essentially a version of the Intermediate Monarch (I have seen it called an 'Intermediate Junior'). On no account should you repaint that horn.

This model (also known as 'C.Q' or 'H.A.O.') seems to have been mainly an export model, so it is not surprising to find one sold by DG, but the case was made in England. Not at Hayes, because the cabinet factory had not opened in 1911. We know that a batch of cases for the C.Q. was being made by British Ericsson in May 1911, but HMV were using various cabinet factories at that time, so I cannot be sure that yours was made there. The metal reinforcements in the plinth moulding (unusual, but I have seen them before) are probably unique to whichever cabinet maker made this case.

The knob on the winder is not removable, except by undoing the rivet. The pin in the centre of the knob has a large head and is rivetted into the crank. It is unlikely that you would be able to remove it without damaging the rivetted end, so that it would be necessary to make a new pin. That calls for a lathe.

Thank you, Oedipus, for once more sharing your extensive knowledge. I appreciate much the details you give in your responses, information that would be close to impossible to get access to from other sources. It is a great way to aqcuire knowledge directly from you here on the forum, and I can't utter strongly enough how grateful I am for this information.
I expected you to say that the horn on no account must not repainted, and I also fully agree with that statement, I rised the question just to get confirmed that my own assumption was correct:) It would be close to sacrilege to ruin the old paint and trademark logo this way. I feel it on this occasion is much better to allow the horn to wear it's history with pride, and also showing it's original paint. I need try to stop the rust process though before waxing the horn, I don't know if I can use Autosol metal polish directly on the paint, I need check that out, so far I have only used Autosol on nickel and chrome (with success).
I really would like to nickel plate the winder though, I have removed all the rust and black old tar that was attached to it, but there is no nickel left at all, but I need be careful not destroying the knob. I don't really like the idea of substituting it with a new made knob..but also I guess it can be a challenge to electroplate the winder without disturbing the wood knob. I have ordered a few items online to try electroplating, but for sure will not start with the winder. I will test a few other items first, also possibly an old winder from an off brand gramophone, that also has a wooden knob. I will try wrap the knob up in plastic and seal it as much as possible, hoping the wood parts will not be affected by the electroplating process. If anyone has any inputs on this process, please feel free to comment.
I feel very lucky to at all having been able to find this early HMV winder for my Intemediate Monarch really. :clover:
