Thank you, Oedipus, for once more sharing your extensive knowledge. I appreciate much the details you give in your responses, information that would be close to impossible to get access to from other sources. It is a great way to aqcuire knowledge directly from you here on the forum, and I can't utter strongly enough how grateful I am for this information.
I expected you to say that the horn on no account must not repainted, and I also fully agree with that statement, I rised the question just to get confirmed that my own assumption was correct:) It would be close to sacrilege to ruin the old paint and trademark logo this way. I feel it on this occasion is much better to allow the horn to wear it's history with pride, and also showing it's original paint. I need try to stop the rust process though before waxing the horn, I don't know if I can use Autosol metal polish directly on the paint, I need check that out, so far I have only used Autosol on nickel and chrome (with success).
I really would like to nickel plate the winder though, I have removed all the rust and black old tar that was attached to it, but there is no nickel left at all, but I need be careful not destroying the knob. I don't really like the idea of substituting it with a new made knob..but also I guess it can be a challenge to electroplate the winder without disturbing the wood knob. I have ordered a few items online to try electroplating, but for sure will not start with the winder. I will test a few other items first, also possibly an old winder from an off brand gramophone, that also has a wooden knob. I will try wrap the knob up in plastic and seal it as much as possible, hoping the wood parts will not be affected by the electroplating process. If anyone has any inputs on this process, please feel free to comment.
I feel very lucky to at all having been able to find this early HMV winder for my Intemediate Monarch really.
