is there currently any contraptions like these for sale on the market I'd like to try one. My external horn machine plays great but sometimes the songs are just too loud and I wish there was a way to control the volume.

That's where soft and medium tone needles are useful. Also, the old rolled up sock inserted partially in the horn is a great volume control. Edison actually used a variation, a ball made of soft felt attached to a slider rod, as a volume/tone control for the Edison Diamond Disc phonograph.

I use a soft pillow to mute the horn of the Aeolian Vocalion, for the rubber ball of the graduola needs to be reinstalled.
