I second Jerry's suggestion. I used to do all my own mainsprings, but the novelty wore off after about 40 years. Ron will return your spring barrel ready to drop into your motor for about an extra $15. These days that's the route I take, and I haven't looked back.

My gears do have a kind of pawl that is a flat spot that catches a bend in the end of the spring. That jumping and slipping did cross my mind and I pried up those ends a bit as they were a bit flattened out, but it still acted up. I don’t see any wear or smooth spots on the gears or gear shafts, so I’ll be contacting Ron to see if I can send it to him. ;)
