Nice work David, for future reference, the "silver piece" is called the crank escutcheon. I think you'd be better off leaving it in place. It's staked (see the dimple inside its bore) in place. If you try to remove it, you will chip out the wood around the hole.

I wasn’t sure if I could still call it that since it wasn’t screwed into the cabient I figured removing it would be a bad idea. What should I clean it off with when I finish putting coats of shellac on the case?

I use "Nevr-Dull" for all my nickel plated hardware. It seems to work also on other metal finishes, too. I've never tried it on gold plating though.

I’ve been putting coats on since 7 today haha and went till I liked the way it looked. Let it dry for about an hour and put it back together. I don’t have the micro sol and micro set, but I do have the decal. Do I need to do the decal soon? Or can I wait a few weeks before I order those chemicals?

EDIT: for those who refinish with shellac.... how do you put on your decals? Do you use spray shellac after you apply the decal?

Here’s some pictures! Overall I’m really happy with it, and the patches aren’t too noticeable! But I think the stain I used hid the grain? Other than that I think it looks pretty good.

Any thoughts/ comments would be great!

Is there a good way to touch up the bedplate paint?

Can I carefully tape the sides and then paint the lines that have faded? The paint looks great as is, but since I’m restoring it why not restored the bedplate paint as well (I’m referring to the blue pinstriping)

If anyone has done this, what brand paint / color did you use?

That really looks good, David... If you wipe some amber shellac over the decal using a clean cloth, the decal will look aged and disappear into the finish... As far as the blue striping goes, I think it looks good the way it is. If you try to paint over the original it may get screwed up because of paint incompatibility or just look crappy from trying to tape it... If you are really determined, use Gregg's decals and place them over the original...
