Bill,

Just a theory. Hard to tell for sure what's gone on there from the photos.

Here goes: The heat bluing on the shaft tells me that maybe the gear had come loose long ago and was soldered back in place, (which, if done well should be an okay repair). I'm also thinking that some solder had run onto the shaft pin and around the shaft shoulder, where it steps down to the pin. Through repeated use, that stray solder may have worn off & ground into the bearing hole in the plate, causing the shaft to bind.

I'm thinking that if everything was cleaned up well, the gear could be soldered in place, with any stray solder removed from the pin end of the shaft, (and the teeth of the small gear), and the adjacent shoulder. A very thin washer, that fits closely to the pin diameter might be some help, only if its thickness does not cause the shaft to bind between the two motor plates.

Some good close-up photos of the shaft end, bearing hole, and gear attachment might yield other ideas.

Here are some closeups of the end of the shaft, gears, and bearing hole. The first photo is the side of the cover that faces the gears, the last is the outside of the cover. Let me know if these help to see what might be going on.

I think it's as I suspected. Looks like solder has spilled over onto the shaft pin and bound up the shaft. If you can resolder the gear, and clean up the shaft really well, I htink you'll be okay.
