Re: Hotogy Soundbox
Among the few things that can be seen (and guessed) in the photos, I want to claim attention to this.
Be seems to use the same ortho diaphragm (also found in the hmv 5a) with the tangential edge corrugations.
Seems to use the spider (? Not clearly seen).
The outlet phaser is different, though, than the bullet used in those other soundboxes.
There is a mass reduction in the needle chuck and the fixing screw.
The needlebar seems to be (in the first model) more stiff and substantial than the one used in those other diaphragms. But could be made of aluminium too, disguised by the black painting. There are holes to lighten it still more. With this, probably he got a higher stiffness to mass ratio. Hence the better treble transmission.
The back seems to be aluminium. I'm not totally convinced about this, as the reactive mass of the soundbox is needed to avoid the sound energy from escaping by the sb body and the tonearm. But certainly, with other parameters changed (mainly the masses in the movable parts) , the soundbox mass could be reduced accordingly.
The material and thickness of the diaphragm is unknown. Seems to be more golden coloured than the clear grey of the aluminium diaphragms. A mystery to be ever solved?
There is a guy in YouTube demonstrating a new soundbox that can play vinyl 78s (one of those issues of Robert Crumb in his Ordinary label). That soundbox is very light, and sensitive, and the sound is simply astonishing. I must recover the link and post it later herein... Not at hand now.

I was looking for that in response to another thread; but I haven't been able to find it...Inigo wrote: There is a guy in YouTube demonstrating a new soundbox that can play vinyl 78s (one of those issues of Robert Crumb in his Ordinary label). Re: Hotogy Soundbox
Googling for info on this soundbox or his reported inventor, I've found that there are several patents filed by this man for the Baldwin Piano Co, look in..

That's incredible!
On a side note, WHY do YouTube posters insist on keeping the lids open on Orthophonic machines???? UGH!

Re: Hotogy Soundbox
That's quite interesting! The man is an inventor, judging from the various patents. The sound is excellent, but we have to account for the fact that it is a modern record that would sound good even with an orthophonic. Unfortunately we cannot see much of the soundbox, but it joins the Hotogy in the rank of excellency in modern gramophone reproducers.Inigo wrote:Found it!!

Re: Hotogy Soundbox
There is some discussion of this soundbox, along with the Edisonic horn, by Thomas Kimble in an earlier thread.
