A business machine showed up on Ebay. Its in rough shape.... That one has an electric motor though. The dealers plaque on the front is neat.
Anyone know what the thing dangling on the top is for?

I don't know what the thing is hanging on that machine. I wondered the same thing. Anybody know?
While on the subject of Business phonographs, here is one coming up at auction. Looks to be a nice example.

I believe that little dangly thing is a small mechanical pencil. I've got a much later Ediphone that has one for marking notations on the little card that one kept with the dictation cylinder. The card was held by the rectangular flat piece near the mandrel. (It would be cool if somebody replicated the pot metal mandrel pulley for this.) Very neat machine!

I concur that it's for a pencil--although I, too, have only seen that on later Ediphone machines. I'd also like to see someone make the mandrel pulleys. That pot metal part is probably the most problematic on the Business Phonograph.

A few years ago, I virtually gave away an oak-cased, electric model which needed only a little work on the recorder and reproducer.
I must be a "hoarder", because the few items I've sold over the years are still regretted.

Another Edison Business Phonograph is on Ebay. Its an electric motor version and its in nice condition, it seems. Looks like they are still coming out of the woodwork.

That's the same phonograph I posted a picture of above. It was at auction and was obviously bought to resell on eBay.

The machine sold for $1,525.00. More than I expected given the rough shape. The other on Ebay should bring more due to condition..Lets see...
Are the electric motor versions worth more than a comparable condition spring motor one? Does anyone know the numbers of these machines sold? and the numbers of Spring wound vs electric?
Just curious.

NEFaurora, Looks like that machine got a lot of use. Looks like the bed plate might have been repainted?? and someone painted the pointer and controls red/white. Nevertheless, it is a nice example of a spring motor type. I see that it has what looks like the original front horn mount.
Thanks for sharing.
