On the other hand, there is also something to be said for taking a semi-wreck and using it to learn restoration techniques. Better to learn and experiment on something where value or even sentimentality is not a concern.

I'm going to pile on to this as well. I have restored several machines that were not worth the time or money I put into them. Without working on those beat up machines of less value, I probably wouldn't have tackled (or messed up) the nicer machines I keep around the house today.
