They explained to me that they had pretty significant interest, and that was also apparent from the photos I received.

This example did have an oil bath motor and the horn was present.

So no one here bought it? Garret? Not a bad price at all. It's got to be worth £6000-7000 in that condition.

I don't have any experience with oil bath motors, and was a bit concerned about the dripping on the horn from this one. I also really wanted to look at it in person before going higher with my bid.

Adding the 31% premium and a possible transport cost within England, the total amounts to around 6000 GBP, so not a real bargain, but still a nice price. Certainly much less than the 10000 euro (8500 GBP in 2010) I paid for it, but mine was in Bremen, so I drove and picked it up myself, about 15 years ago when prices for such machines were higher. I never regretted having bought it, it paid its investment several times by the pleasure of listening to the wonderfully reproduced music that the 202 is capable to deliver.

The 31% assumes it was an online bidder. The auction 'only' charges 21% plus VAT. I completely agree with you though about the price being irrelevant when you factor in the enjoyment the machine brings. My 202 cost me £5500 nearly 18 years ago but its worth more to me than what I paid for it. I've used it as much as my Expert Senior over the period I've owned both (Expert came to me from Frank James in 2007).

On the European continent the 202 is more appreciated than here in the UK and there are even less of them available so I do believe your machine is probably still worth 10,000 Euros, give or take a little.

Yes, Steve, 202s in Continental Europe probably count around a dozen or so, over the years there was one for sale in Spain, one more recently in Italy, and maybe there are some more in collectors' hands.

If the HMV 202 was from 1910, I would be interested in it. But this model is a generation later than the records I listen to. Somehow it doesn't fit together.

I understand and indeed greatly admire your strict collecting policy (I only wish I was half as disciplined), but the 202 would make even the earlier records you listen to sound so much better!

I agree with Steve. I have many acoustic recording era records and my HMV202 and Credenza make their sound a lot better and clearer. Especially HMV202 has a U-shape trap throat between the end of the tone arm and the main horn to lessen scratch noise.

While the price for a collector in Britain was quiet good, someone in the EU or even USA/asia would have needed to pay high taxes and duty costs. At the end the price would not have been much lower than for a tested and restored example.

For someone like me from germany, the whole machine and the trip to england by ship and car would have cost around 8000 euros.
But I already have my Electrola 203 and “just“ had to drive 14 hours

I knew you‘re machine and it always sounded really impressing! I just think you got the year wrong
