Re: VV-IX schoolhouse model

I went ahead and purchased the Victor Victrola IX w/ the teacart cabinet (not Schoolhouse model- although if a Columbia, it would be- ah, the fun of learning new things on this forum never ends!!). The cabinet is in decent shape, missing a few parts but no impossible repairs. The machine itself isn't too fantastic, it has a bad, and badly repaired crack on the back of the lid & the wrong reproducer. I'll either wait until a machine comes along to replace it, or perhaps get a lid and keep the machine. Here are a few extra pictures to finish up the post..

Label is on the bottom-- It says:
Schloss Brothers A corporation manufacturer of furniture and novelties
NO. 700 637-640 West 55 St New York

From- http://www.gracyk.com/makers.shtml

"Firms made record cabinets in all shapes and styles. The Schloss Brothers in New York and the Udell Works in Indianapolis made cabinets specifically to hold the common Victor and Columbia table models. Some cabinets held the phonograph exposed on top of the cabinet".

Thanks again to all for the enlightening and informative comments and advice.

Steve,

You just beat me to it! I just found the ad I was thinking of - - Schloss Brothers! This one is from the June 1919 issue of the Talking Machine World. Interestingly, it lists only the 701, 702, and 703. I wonder if the hand-written "700" was a mistake, or if there were two different models for the "New Victrola IX"? Either way, that's an interesting cabinet. Congratulations!

Also, note that No. 703 was offered as "Matches Columbia D" - - so not every Columbia D on a Pushmobile was necessarily meant for use in a school. Columbia offered this or a similar wheeled cabinet as an option to the D, marketing to schools, but any customer could buy one too.

I almost hate to post a further comment after I saw the picture I ended this with last time... But I'm going to do it anyway. Here's the "continuation" of the story:

As I said previously, "The machine itself isn't too fantastic, it has a bad, and badly repaired crack on the back of the lid & the wrong reproducer. I'll either wait until a machine comes along to replace it, or perhaps get a lid and keep the machine."

On Craigslist locally last week, there was a listing for a IX with a record cabinet to go with it. I emailed the seller to find out that there was someone in line before me. I didn't hear back so figured it had sold. I had emailed the seller from work initially(during lunch of course) and when I arrived Monday, there was a note, written Sat. that the 1st person could not make it and it was mine if I wanted it. I thought, oh no, probably missed it again due to the delay in responding!!. However, when I called, it was still available so I took ½ day off to drive across town to get it.

When I saw it, I thought, oh man, it's going to be hard to split this up. It is in good condition (somewhat alligatored) was bought as a set, belonged to the sellers family, and had been stored for a number of years. The cabinet has a continuation top, the IX slides in from the back, and the cabinet even has the key.

When I got it home, I took the poorer machine (Serial- 231315G) off the pushcart cabinet to see how the new purchase (Serial 417055) fit, and to my surprise, it is slightly smaller and the legs would not seat down into the spaces in the pushcart cabinet top..

So, I am right back where I started, except with a nice IX, great continuation cabinet, and a bunch of records that came with it. When the seller said, oh those are a bunch of old foxtrots, I said, "I'll just look at them when I get home". Turned out that there were about 15 of the really late Orthophonic records- with the V- prefix, that are much much better than "old foxtrots". It was a great ½ day off work!!

There was a third Victor sschool phonograph, the 8-7 which was the first Orthophonic school machine. It was a very plain machine in an oak cabinet on wheels. The 8-8 was a much more attractive follow-up which was also sold as the 8-9 without the wheels.

Pic's of an 8-7 in my collection. Probably about as nice as they come.

Note the table that lifts off the back of the machine...

Think they stopped production in the late 20's and moved on to the 8-8 which was a little fancier..
