Asking about value opens the door to offers because there aren't many reasons to inquire.
I can think of 4: You want to sell for at least that 'value'. You want to buy for less. You HAVE bought and hope it was a good deal. You want to buy insurance. Are there other reasons, besides bragging that you got a $1000 thing for a dime?

Maybe there should be a rule that you need to be on the list for a year before trying to pick brains for free appraisals.

I think it is perfectly legitimate to politely collect information, including the selling price, from those who can provide them. No need for restrictions.

I appreciate every ones help but the reason for asking value is to sell, I'm sure that when anyone obtains something that they do not know anything about will go to a forum or such to ask about that item. Say you obtained a George Washington Signature on a letterhead of some sort and knew nothing about it, I'm sure you would not want to have to be a member of a forum for a year just to Inquire about where to start with it, I thought that was what the forum was for,If not what good is it to just show off what everyone has with no discussions on value, where to get parts or such things, I only came to this forum because it seemed like the appropriate place to ask about the machine. As for the military machines, they are one of the "antiques and collectables" that appeal to a wider variety of collectors. Not only phonograph collectors, but also military collectors would be interested. How cool would this look in the back of an old restored army jeep?

Not very, since there is a roughly 24-year gap between the A&N DD and the Willys MB Jeep. Maybe on the back of a mule, but not a Jeep!

Not very, since there is a roughly 24-year gap between the A&N DD and the Willys MB Jeep. Maybe on the back of a mule, but not a Jeep!

If you can look past the massive anachronism it would still be somewhat cool. It would be much more cool in the back of a 1910's Renault with a YMCA sign on the door.

Imho there is nothing wrong with trying to find out the current value of your machine. I've got a quite rare near mint portable German Electrola that I bought of the net some years ago. I wouldn't think of selling it, but for insurance purposes I may have to mention its actual worth. And where else would you find comprehensive knowledge than here? Here in continental Europe , there is only one dealer left that can be trusted. The rest is selling Frankenphones or heavily restored (ie containing non-original parts) machines at funny prices, everything else is shipped to the Far East by the container load. So this forum is just about the only place where you can find information from non-commercial really knowledgeable people. And if you don't want to talk of value openly or show interest in buying, you can always pm the person who wants to know.

What I think sounds more interesting that the machine might be the record carrying case- I've never seen one of the original ones that accompanied the machine.
