In other words, they're stating that you're not enjoying your collection correctly. As if you're drinking Kool-aid out of the Holy Grail... Every hobby has those sticklers. Thank them for their viewpoint and move on. Not worth wasting any time or emotion on it.

I would be tempted to ask the sender of that comment to state precisely and in detail what tests were carried out and by whom.Edisonfan wrote: Tue Apr 18, 2023 5:51 am “Playing it on an early machine once is equal to playing it 1000 times on modern light tone arm & stylus. Then on reflection I would not bother, as such people are not worth the time and effort.
There are plenty of CD reissues for those who want to hear old recordings on modern equipment.

What a complete idiot. Note how the point is not about "future generations", but "future generations of collectors"Edisonfan wrote: Tue Apr 18, 2023 5:51 am “Playing it on an early machine once is equal to playing it 1000 times on modern light tone arm & stylus. This discussion reminds me of a guy I met years ago, who had a nice upscale stereo system, but bought LPs and kept them unplayed, in their shrink wraps, carefully arranged in the record shelf. When I asked why he did not play them, he explained that it was his homage to the artists, because playing the records would wear them out. That confirmed my suspicion that the fellow was nuts and I never talked to him since.

Driving this vintage car for one mile is equal to driving it 1000 times keeping it still in the garage while making engine noises with your mouth. So you decide if it's worth keeping it unused and useless for you as well as all other people, until it gets scrapped by careless relatives.

Yes. Most definitely, yes!CarlosV wrote: Tue Apr 18, 2023 7:41 am This discussion reminds me of a guy I met years ago, who had a nice upscale stereo system, but bought LPs and kept them unplayed, in their shrink wraps, carefully arranged in the record shelf. Once in a thrift shop I found an early LP by the Jazz guitarist, Kenny Burrell. It looked OK but was unplayable because of organic contamination. This was in the late 70s or early 80s when record cleaning machines were quite new and were very expensive. I took it to a very snooty high-end audiophile shop that had a Keith Monk's record cleaning machine with which they would clean records for a fee. The shop cleaned the record, but I was treated like a leper. I was told that my sickness was that I bought used records when even new records should never be played more than once--after that they lose their pristine HOLY GRAIL audio quality and are unlistenable. The Burrell album was very nice, not in perfect audio condition, but the music was very nice.
I had a close friend, sadly now passed away, who was off the deep-end with audiophile gear, many tens of thousands of dollars spent. He would buy really expensive audiophile LPs by artists who specialised in recording sonically superb (both in terms of recording and physical media) records of really boring pointless music. I tried to play 78s for him, things that I thought he would like, but he could not stand them and asked me to take them off. If I am honest, I must say that good music sounded amazing on his gear, whether the LPs had surface noise or not.
I have another close friend who is a superb Jazz pianist. I have played 78s of old Jazz for him. I asked him about the surface noise. He shrugged and said, "I really don't hear it because that is not what I am listening to." Because he has near perfect pitch, both absolute and relative, he noticed the greater wow and flutter on my acoustic gramophones, but it did not bother him in the least.

Might I suggest that NONE of you go over to the APSG FaceBook page then, it's entirely populated by folks (okay, not entirely but one or two loud ones) telling other people how to curate their collections. It'd be one thing if it were in a friendly way but more commonly it's in a derogatory "I can't believe you don't already know what I know and are wasting my time by making me click on your post and comment" sort of way.

A friend of mine was mentioning the other day that he recently blocked someone for this very reason. The idea of someone trying to foist their opinion on others starts to get me hot under the collar. I'd be tempted to make a special video just for their enjoyment, along the lines of what Mr Burns once said: "Come on Smithers, let's break something tasteful..." Once again I'm glad I don't go anywhere near TwitFace or any other form of social tedia.Dischoard wrote: Thu Apr 20, 2023 1:12 pm Might I suggest that NONE of you go over to the APSG FaceBook page then, it's entirely populated by folks (okay, not entirely but one or two loud ones) telling other people how to curate their collections.
