It looks ugly, especially the two horizontal bars are. It might have a same horn as hmv 130. Other parts look similar to hmv 158.

As I said earlier, I suspect the two bars are replacements as they have been otherwise re-finished with some incongruous varnish and stain.

No, he is not the seller.
Out of curiosity I contacted the seller, and he can ship abroad !
I even got a quote from an Australian freight company, they asked aud 1350 to pack and ship it.
The friendly seller, offered to drive it to the depot.
I will not buy it, but if any of you have interest, I can put you in contact with the freight company.
Unfortunately the machine is 21 kg, and the limit for the Australian Post, that has far better shipping rates, is 20 kg.

Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding the 179 has now been (under)sold to a collector in Australia, but not Chunny (I had to be sure of that first)! Like you, I contacted the seller out of interest and he initially stated he wouldn't ship it abroad. However I made him an offer substantially more than the asking price and he quickly changed his mind. This morning he promised to send me some better photos showing the entire machine with the proviso that if I wanted it, I had to agree to buy at my price more or less straight away, to which I agreed. I checked the listing and the seller had ended it prematurely.
Fast forward a few hours and I'd heard nothing more so I contacted the seller again to receive a reply stating that he thought I didn't want it due to the high shipping costs, identical to those stated in your post. Apparently I'd already said this to him even though our correspondence had ended at that point with me asking for the photos and him agreeing to send them "shortly". He clearly didn't make a note of who was who and got me mixed up with you, nostalgia? I think he's been reading this forum and saw your post saying you weren't going to buy it and because you had been in touch with him he thought I was you and therefore it was me who didn't want it!
A case of mistaken identity and lack of attention to detail by a seller in a flummox. Nothing new there then! Oh well, it's his loss........

In other HMV Ebay related news, the sellers of the cut down Junior Grand are now armed with all the proof they will ever need that their gramophone is not all as original and has been detrimentally and irreversibly modified. They are grateful for us folk reaching out to advise them, so grateful in fact that they have chosen to leave their listing exactly as it is, price 'n' all to try to convince people it's all perfectly original!
A seller of an 88A believes it's an incredibly rare machine but when I pointed out there are no less then 4 for sale right now on Ebay, he said his was worth more than the others because he'd cleaned it.
Finally, one of the other 88A sellers has a great example with "beautiful original covering in great condition". In fact it's been recovered with vinyl (no, not THAT vinyl ie. modern parlance for 33rpm records) instead of rexine. He defends his description by hiding out somewhere and pretending to be deaf.
I do love an honest Ebay seller. If only I could find one!

Hard to say what happened here, Steve. I wrote him very early GMT, probably around 8 am, and during the next hour I chatted with this international freight company, got a quote from them quickly on email, and told the seller then it became too expensive. I checked my email right now, and my last email to him was sent 08:15 GMT, where he minutes later replied, he understod the concerns with the international delivery.
He immediately accepted my offer in my first email, which was the same as he requested on Ebay, and I also in the first email told him my country of residence.
Let's hope it gets a good home, this colonial 179.

I was also talking to him about the same time. Imagine that, but I offered him DOUBLE his asking price. Although he was initially reticent to ship it, the offer convinced him to rethink. As Bob Dylan said: "Money doesn't talk, it swears"
Anyway, wherever it's going, it's not coming my way anytime soon due to the seller's ridiculous mistake. The eventual buyer got it for the asking price. I hope the seller has learnt a hard lesson.
