Well, I'm one of those who thinks this stuff should be posted in the Yankee Trader section (particularly by those who know better), or moved when a new member may not be aware of the Yankee Trader section, but as I said to Mario, it seems some high-end collectors feel they dont have follow the right procedures because they are the worst offenders.
But kudos to Starkton for the sneeky way he posted a wanted ad.

Shane, you're right. I didn't look at it that way, babe in the woods that I am. iirc correctly this is not the first time this member has tried to bend the forum rules.
Imho forums are about sharing, not trying to get personal advantage from well-meaning but less-informed members. But then, I'm universally known as an idealist. I've got nothing to hide, I like to share my knowledge and learn a lot from others. For me, that's what makes life worth living.
Peter.

I guess I'm a babe in the woods too, as I took his initial posting's ending as a merely a joke.
I certainly agree that wanted ads/sale ads should be posted in the proper section of this forum, but if it gets to the point where a member can't write something like, "I'd love to find a ....... someday," I think we'd be getting a little too sensitive.
Maybe I really am a babe in the woods!

I agree. I am a member of another radio forum where they take it very seriously if something is incorrectly placed in one of thier many sub categories and anyone transgressing the rules is stamped on hard! It seems too pedantic to me and actually puts me off contributing. They also have very strict rules on mentioning ebay. Its just not allowed and if you do then your thread / comment will be deleted and if you keep doing it your membership is suspended. Not having read all the miriad of rules is no defense either! Far too A.R. for my liking. I would hate this forum to go down the route where there is an active gestapo in operation suspending members for small transgressions of the rules such as this. I for one am pleased that a collector with such rare items is happy to share what he has with the rest of us. Otherwise no one but him would get to see it.

Thank you George and Swing Band Heaven,
I will continue to post my findings on this forum which is certainly the best of its kind, but promise to choose my words more carefully to avoid bad feelings.

Hmm, I'm not sure how you'd take "I am still looking for the first red seal catalogue of May 1903. Anybody willing to sell it to me?" as a joke George. It seems pretty obvious to me
It's simply just another case of a high-end collector attempting to buy or sell a rare item by placing his advertisement in the general discussions section of the board. Adding a picture of the front cover of another catalogue, & another picture with half the text cut off doesn't change that.

I'm still looking for a Gutenberg Bible. Anybody willing to sell it to me?
As far as rarity, both items in question are probably comparable, although value is another matter.
No doubt I'm pretty thick, but the idea of soliciting a seller for a May 1903 Red Seal catalog in such an offhand manner struck me as mere levity. That's my explanation, and I hope I've offended no one.

Oh yeah, I'm looking to "buy" land in Florida......

I for one (as I has said) think that catalog is very cool.

What a fascinating catalog! It would be wonderful to see this catalog as a .pdf, just as we've been treated to various issues of "Voice of the Victor" in recent months.

I would need a professional scanner and a lot of cold-bloodedness to do so. I cannot open the catalogue, which is rather thick and an extreme upright format, to an angle of more than about 50 degrees without damaging the spine and the brittle envelope. As you can imagine I hesitate to remove the staples to disassemble it and lay it flat!
The depicted scan of the inner pages was already beyond the limit, hence I didn't repeat it although it is somewhat blurred and the right side is a little trimmed. Nevertheless it gives a good impression of the page layout.
