Here's an image capture from the 1927 Sears catalog of the Portola model this type of sound box was used on:

I used to own this model--the one on the right. I remember it was very loud, but not much in terms of sound quality, since the "horn" was simply a pocket under the tonearm. The case was ruggedly built and quite heavy for its size.
