Oak Edison Amberola 1A

I find it hard to believe that any oak Edison Amberola 1A's were factory released with maroon upper works. Obviously, anything is possible but it sure seems unlikely to me.

I know of one 1A, oak with lyre grill, maroon bedplate and matching numbers on the upper works and cabinet. I own a 1A, lyre grill, matching numbers that had a light blue upper works, no pen striping. Apparently it was in poor condition and a subsequent owner had the blue stripped off and re-done with a gun metal finish. I'm sure these variationis weren't common though. Almost all 1As in oak have gun metal upper works.

I think the oak and maroon go quite well together by the way. This machine seems like a very good deal in oak with that first style rococco grill.

So, referencing one original oak Amberola 1A with maroon upper works with matching serial numbers confirms my comment that "Obviously, anything is possible...." Frow's book also indicates "Variations of these combinations have been reported" regarding upper works finish and cabinet wood species.

It would be interesting to see pictures of the completely original Amberola 1A in oak with the original maroon upper works and matching serial numbers that you referenced. Personally, I think maroon upper works in a mahogany cabinet looks really nice but maroon upper works in an oak cabinet - not so much. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the old saying goes.

In fact, considering everything that I see on this Amberola 1A including the fine job on the record storage door and inclusion of both the desirable model M reproducer and the diamond model A reproducers and cylinder records this is a very tempting and reasonable price for anyone in the greater NC area.

I cannot locate my reference material as of this writing but I had thought the first style rococo grille on an Edison Amberola 1A was as seen on my Herzog cabinet Amberola 1A in the picture below. If the rococo grille in the OP's Amberola 1A pictures is indeed the first style rococo grille then what style of grille is on my Herzog Amberola 1A here?

My oak Edison Amberola 1A in the early Herzog cabinet and first style rococo grille is serial number 510. I was pretty certain that mine had the first style rococo grille and I appreciate your confirming it. Regarding the referenced oak Edison Amberola 1A with maroon upper works, I know the collector who owns it and he's not that far away from me. When I visit him next I will ask to see the serial numbers and take some pictures to confirm which I'm sure he will permit as he is a friend of mine. When he first purchased his oak Edison Amberola 1A with maroon upper works I was suspicious that the upper works had been replaced with those from a mahogany Amberola 1A. I'll be sure to post the pictures here unless he beats me to it (if he's still a member here and sees this post!).
