The magnetic stereo cartridge is combination of both vertical & lateral cut.

By messing with the wires/phasing it was possible for me to listen to my Diamond Discs for the first time.

Now I just push a button on my Souvenir preamp.

That's the trick... to phase out lateral movement by addition of the two channels in parallel in the proper order (one channel reversed) Same in direct parallel to play lateral records in pure lateral motion, 'mono' mode.

Berliner's lateral etching method traced the groove through a thin fatty film onto the solid surface of zinc, the groove then being etched into the disc with an acid bath rather than actually being cut into a surface. I'm presuming that the thinking of the time was that the fatty film offered minimal resistance, and was thought (by Berliner and his crew, anyway) to be a superior method to recording vertically in wax, a more solid surface that did give some resistance to the cutting stylus. By the time Johnson started cutting his lateral groove in a wax billet, lateral actually had resistance from the surface just as vertical recording did.

With regard to wiring the Stereo channels to remove lateral sound; keep in mind that the preamplifiers electrical load (resistance and capacitance) is designed for one channel. Wiring them in parallel will change the channel resistance and cause a degradation in the frequency response.

I record in Stereo, and then create the vertical or lateral response via Software on the recorded Stereo music files.

The grooves on a Hill & Dale go up and down and require a flat surface to record. The grooves on a lateral go left and right and can be played on most gramophones.
