Here in Canada we have the problem compounded by the inspections of American and Canadian officials if they start opening boxes.
An avid young collector to whom I sold a couple of boxes of records told me of a sale shipped from Canada to the US.
The single Blues record, one of eight known copies, was sold for $8K, packed Nauck style, and shipped and insured.
American officials were curious (I guess) about a single record with such a high declared value and opened the box and undid all the packaging. They did not bother to repackage the record, however. They just laid it in the box on top of the packing materials.
It arrived in shards.

Re: 78 records and eBay
When buying records on eBay, I always look at the seller's "other items" to see if they commonly sell 78s. If not, I don't bid. The only exceptions might be for some cheap record, priced cheaply, that I'll take a chance on. Nearly every record I've purchased from a non-record seller has arrived broken. I must say however, that the purchase price of nearly every broken record was refunded to me.

George, would you please share the packing instructions that you provide to the sellers? Thanks.

Americans can be careless and ignorant! One of the reasons why other countries don't like us so much. Mind you, we're not all bad.Lah Ca wrote: Sat Feb 03, 2024 10:07 am Here in Canada we have the problem compounded by the inspections of American and Canadian officials if they start opening boxes.

Part of my point was that it could have gone just as badly the other way.Edisonfan wrote: Sat Feb 03, 2024 12:13 pmAmericans can be careless and ignorant! Canadians are quieter and politer, perhaps.
The American officials can be rude and obnoxious but they are just as rude and obnoxious to Americans. I believe that the population of Point Roberts (a small American enclave entirely separated from the continental US) once almost rose up in rebellion over how badly they were treated. So maybe Canadians have better manners, but manners are only a facade.
Based upon my experiences, I would say the mind set of the two services is very similar.

I have used similar instructions without the graphics, but with extra verbiage:
"The phonograph is not of any commercial value."
Thomas Alva Edison - Comment to his assistant, Samuel Insull.
"No one needs a Victrola XX, a Perfected Graphophone Type G, or whatever you call those noisy things."

Re: 78 records and eBay
That’s so disappointing. I’ve had only two 78’s shipped poorly packed by Ebay sellers, both rare blues records. One was sandwiched, sleeveless, between two panes of picture frame glass, and shipped in a large shipping envelope. When it arrived, i could hear broken glass when it was handed to me by the postman. Miraculously, the disc survived without so much as a scratch.Edisonfan wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 7:11 pm A few days ago, I won an auction on eBay for a 78 record of The Dixieland Jug Blowers-Memphis Sheik. Everything went smoothly, until the record arrived today in four pieces.
The other blues record was shipped in an envelope used for Lp’s and, just like yours, arrived in four pieces. So disheartening.
You will find another copy of this record as it does turn up and should not be too expensive. I just bought a nice copy of this off Ebay that arrived a week ago safely packaged, and the price was very reasonable.
Best of luck,
Steven
