The rescue of "ugly"records from the trash bin

I'm still pondering however about what to do with the circa 20 copies of Harry Lime's Theme from the Third Man - this record seems to sneak in every lot I buy, and probably found a way to breed in the dark corners of the record collection.

I have only three or four copies. They are safely isolated in separate boxes, at least I hope so.

Finally, I can hardly believe anyone having a wife that would happily listen to 78s and help selecting them as a sort of game. Now that's what I call luck.

I’m ever trying to build my 78 collection, records have seem to become rarer to find where I live these days, wonderful job lots still occasionally show up, but not very often, and I’ve nearly filled the record shelves I built a couple years ago, ever looking for an excuse to build another, mind there is some absolute rubbish in a pile in a hallway that will never reach the shelves, it’s been picked through time and time again and they’re still rejects.

In that vein, here’s a little plaque I made during a particularly slow day in the workshop

I read both parts of your very good and informative text. What immediately excited me was your mentioning of artists like Lillian Blauvelt, Amelita Galli-Curci, Adelina Patti, Corinne Morgan and Suzanne Adams; and in the next part "some rare and valuable disks, including test pressings". Can you give a few examples of your best finds in your friend's collection? I'm really just asking out of interest.

All this is very helpful and interesting. But for collectors with multiple interests it is not so easy... Records which have the bad music can be historically interesting, or carry rare beautiful labels, so it can be very difficult. Also, for instance, I love the music on many non valuable records, because they are common, etc. And I have valuable records (arguably valuable by others) which indeed I don't like to play! So for me it's very difficult.
As I've said, also my humour and taste changes from day to day, and if I discard one record it's not rare that the other day I find it nice or interesting and want to rescue it...
I understand from it all that a sacrifice must be done and not look backwards anymore, and sell out records you don't want to keep at home ASAP!

Agree. At times there is even the odd "danceable" tune - with no singer and worth absolutely nothing - that is particularly amusing or entertaining and you definitely don't want to dump.

In my opinion there is no shortcut: all records have to be listened to, possibly more than once in order to compensate for the mood.

When i go to thrift stores/flea markets/etc. i sometimes find broken 78's in the record crates. If i do, i try and find the remaining pieces and then attempt to ask for the broken 78's for free. It's worked every time so far and i now currently have ~5-ish broken 78's waiting to be repaired.

Yes, they sometimes give you the broken ones for free, especially if you also buy other good records.

I'm lately revising my discarded records and rescuing to the collection 95% of the ones in the pile I'm examining right now... It's impossible to let them away... Even done of them are really good... What was I thinking of, me stupid ..?
