These particular shield designs were ONLY available in 1937 and were specifically produced for the commemorative occasion and presented to all the HMV dealers - it was not uncommon for HMV to mark all Royal occasions with some form of commemorative product.

Thank you, Steve for pointing that out. I didn't expect HMV to be THAT generous - but you are right. I dissolved the hallmarks as follows:

"Mn & Wb" = maker's mark of Mappin & Webb

"Anchor" = Birmingham hallmark

"Lion Passant" = symbol for 925 sterling silver

"M" = date mark of 1936

I wonder if at some stage they changed from sterling to E.P.N.S.. or perhaps used it during the depression?

Shane, these particular shields were presented in 1937 and not after. As far as the evidence I've seen suggests, HMV only ever used solid silver and never EPNS. I suppose it might have been insulting to HM The King (and later QEII) to use anything else (cheaper)?

The truth is that a Joe Belmont record of birds chirping was playing on the phonograph and it caught Nipper's attention. He was waiting for the birds to come up through the horn.
